Alfred J. Bernardo of Ridley Park, PA passed away on March 1, 2010 at Neighborhood Hospice after a brief illness.
He was born on December 14, 1928 to the late Carmela (nee Stavola) and Carmine Bernardo in Philadelphia, PA.
Alfred was a 1946 graduate of Ridley Park High School and a 1952 graduate of the Air Force Meteorology School at Oklahoma A&M, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He played for the Air Force Rockets Basketball Team and was the team MVP. Alfred was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force at Fort Bragg, NC, serving with the Air Weather Service.
Alfred worked at Bell Telephone in Ridley Park for 31 years, where he was a Switchman. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Alfred was a member of the Elks Club in Wilmington, DE and the American Legion Post 777. He was an avid golfer and belonged to Rock Manor Country Club. He enjoyed bowling and spending time with his family, especially his nephews and nieces
He is survived by his brother Albert Bernardo (Elizabeth) of Ridley Park, PA, two sisters Susan Bernardo Marchesani (late Louis) of Ridley Park, PA and Mary Bernardo Curley (Robert) of Fort Meyers, FL. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Bernardo (Concetta) of Phila., PA.
Alfred is also survived by nephews William Bernardo (Ceil) of Media, PA, Michael Lincoln (Huyen) of Folsom, PA and Michael Bernardo of Phila., PA, nieces Rosemarie Lincoln Thomas of Bonita Springs, FL, Robin Curley of Coral Springs, FL, Maryanne Marchesani Parsons (Leo) of Chester Springs, PA and Donna Marchesani Cronin (Arthur) of Hershey, PA, 14 great nieces and nephews and 2 great-great nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 9:30-10:30 AM at St. Madeline Church, Penn St. and Morton Ave., Ridley Park, PA 19078. A Memorial Mass will follow at 10:30 AM. Int. Private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Neighborhood Hospice, 400 E. Marshall St., West Chester, PA 19380 or Chester County Hospital, 701 East Marshall St., West Chester, PA 19380 or the Hershey Medical Center Dept. of Palliative Care, 500 University Dr., Hershey, PA 17033.
